Conductor - Concert Master - Second Lead Violin - Members

Christopher Palmer - Conductor

Christopher Palmer was born in The Hague, Netherlands, of Canadian parents. At the age of four, his family moved to London, England. There was a lot of music making and music instruction in his home and at his school, Highgate School. He studied at the Royal College of Music, and later at Ottawa University.

As a professional bassoonist he has played in many orchestras and ensembles, including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Since 1985 he has been a member of Symphony Nova Scotia, and he has occasionally performed as a soloist with them. He also plays organ at his church, does jazz piano gigs, and is active in the community as a teacher, coach and conductor.

As a composer and arranger, he has written scores in many styles. His orchestral works such as "For Those In Peril On The Sea", "Pier 21 Overture, and "From the Delta to Chicago - a Blues Journey" have been performed by Symphony Nova Scotia. The Rhapsody Quintet have performed and recorded his arrangements of songs by Gershwin, Kern and Romberg. The Blue Engine String Quartet have performed and recorded his settings of Christmas Carols and the songs of Leonard Cohen.

As well as taking basic conducting studies at the Royal College of Music and Ottawa University, he has participated in conducting masterclasses with Victor Yampolsky and Alex Pauk at the Scotia Festival of Music, and has attended the Conductors' Institute in Columbia, South Carolina. He also received some good tips from the late Dr. Georg Tintner, a musician who always inspired him. He has conducted various ensembles, including the Chebucto Orchestra, Nova Sinfonia, the Lighthouse Ensemble, Upstream Music, and numerous chamber and contemporary music groups.

Gina Burgess - Concertmaster

Gina Burgess started violin at the age of five at the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts. Under the direction of Philippe Djokic, Gina received her Bachelor of Music from Dalhousie University. During this time she was awarded a number of Talent Trust Awards and String Music Atlantic Awards, won second place in the Kiwanis String Rose Bowl Competition and was awarded first place in the Canadian National Music Festival with the Quantum Quartet. She subsequently attended the University of Toronto studying world music and education.

Gina has attended numerous music festivals and camps, including Domain Forget, ARIA International Summer Music Academy, and the Scotia Festival of Music. Gina has performed as a soloist with Symphony Nova Scotia, as well as other Atlantic ensembles. In addition to being a founding member of the Jubilee Quartet, Gina was also Concertmaster of the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra, the Halifax Schools Symphony Orchestra and currently is the Concertmaster of the Chebucto Symphony Orchestra.

As part of the gypsy-jazz ensemble, Gypsophilia, Gina has performed at many Canadian music festivals and is currently touring the Canadian jazz festival circut. She is currently working as a free lance musician teaching, recording, and performing with various groups in Halifax, NS.groups.

Eszter Horvath - Lead Second Violin

Hungarian-born Eszter Horvath started music lessons while growing up in Germany. Although her main instrument has always been violin, she has also greatly enjoyed opportunities playing both viola and cello in various orchestras.

In Toronto, she attended Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts for violin performance, where she was concertmaster of the string orchestra. She has played in the Mooredale Youth Orchestra (Toronto), Halifax Schools Symphony Orchestra and the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra. Currently she is working towards a combined degree in music and science at Dalhousie University. She has been a section leader of the choir at All Saints Cathedral since 2003.

Eszter is the manager of the Halifax branch of Musician Finders and violinist of the Menuett Trio. Her goal is to pursue her wide-ranging musical interest through conducting, which she is studying under the direction of Christopher Palmer.

The Chebucto Orchestral Society of Nova Scotia is a true Community Orchestra whose members come from all walks of life. Our musicians range from high school and university students to working adults to retired men and women.
