The Chebucto Orchestral Society of Nova Scotia (our
official name) is a charitable organization dedicated to providing an
opportunity for amateur musicians to perform the great symphonic works
and to bring classical music to local audiences.
It is a true
Community Orchestra whose members come from all walks of life. Our
musicians range from high school and university students to working
adults to retired men and women. The Society is administered by a
volunteer Board of Directors drawn from the membership. Repertoire has
ranged from the classics to world premieres of modern Canadian pieces.
The Chebucto
Symphony Orchestra is actively involved in music promotion within our
community. To cultivate this community involvement, the orchestra performs charity concerts, and
occasionally commissions original compositions by Atlantic region
composers. These activities foster an active support of music making
among people in our community who enjoy both listening to and playing
classical and popular music. Our charitable registration number is
11885 0924 RR001.
The Chebucto
Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1975 by the late Kenneth Elloway and
has operated continuously since then. Over the years, it has enjoyed
the leadership of fine musicians such as James Williams, Edmond
Agopian, John Rapson, Christoph Both, and Jordan Grigg. Our current
musical director is Christopher
Palmer.
The Chebucto
Symphony Orchestra performs under SOCAN Account No. 5009684-39. We are
also an affiliate of Orchestras
Canada.
